Tuesday, October 6

LC1 needs to complete grammar page 282. They will have a semi-colon/colon quiz Friday.

All students received a new writing assignment that requires them to complete research to figure out the "origin of their name." We have broken down the steps and they wrote them out on the directions. They are as follows:

1. Interview parents about your name (First and Last) and write down your questions and their answers. For example, if I would have been a boy, what would my name have been? How did you come up with my name? etc.

2. Research the origin of your name. Origin means the place where something begins. Do this with both your first and last name. Print your findings.

3. Brainstorm how you feel about your name. More than I like it or hate it;but, how it has become who you are. For instance, my name Jade Love has given me a lot of attention over the years. I would then go on to explain some of that attention. (They will turn in their brainstorm).

4. Using steps 1-3, students will then write their 400 word essay (MLA format, Times New Roman, Doubled Spaced) including all of the above.

Due Friday, October 16th: interview, research, brainstorm, and final draft of essay.
Students are out of school Mon.-Wed. next week. They should use that time to complete this assignment.

Yesterday, the students were assigned a project that is due Oct. 2 (next Friday). The students had 6 options to choose from. They were to discuss the projects with their parents and decide which one they wanted to complete and have their parent sign their project form. This is to ensure that you are aware of what is going on in class and also to note that their are projects that do not cost any money. Some students did not get the forms signed and need to do so tonight.

The students will have their unit test this week, right after we finish reading the novel. It is a theme/comprehension based test. They need to review the plotline and their literary terms. Lit terms will be on the test!!

Tuesday, September 8th

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend! I know I did! Tomorrow is a big day for the students in English class. They have a large quiz that requires them to give the definitions of all 20 of their vocabulary words and give examples of their use. We have been working on these words daily to increase their knowledge and recognition of their meaning. It is imperative that the students study for this quiz due to the fact the next four quizzes build upon these words. I showed the students the quiz today in class, so they know exactly what to expect. There will be NO remediation for this assignment, as they have had plenty of time and resources to prepare.

Each student has created a set of flashcards with each word, please help your child in calling out the terms and have them define them to you.

Thank you!

Man, I am pooped from today! I had a blast watching the students put up the tents today in English class. Some students were blind folded, some couldn't talk, others could only use their right hand. Whatever the case, each were presented with an obstacle and they had to work together as a team to overcome the challenge. Ask your child, how did today's activity relate to the film, Remember the Titans, which we watched on Friday during seminar.

LC2 needs to make sure they have read and completed chapter 10! There could be a pop quiz in the future (hint, hint).

LC1 and LC3 need to have read through chapter 9 and completed chapter 9 questions.

All learning groups need to make sure they have turned in their first AND second draft of their essay. I will conference with each student with ways to improve their writing so that their final draft will be well written and grammatically correct. Final Drafts will be due Friday in English class. I am available before school if your student needs additional help!

Please view the facebook page for pictures from today's activities! (To be Posted Tomorrow)

Happy Viewing!

Good Afternoon! As week three comes to a close, we are making our way through, To Kill a Mockingbird. THis weekend, students are responsible for reading chapter 9 and complete chapter 9 questions.

Today we used our class time to peer edit an essay the students wrote, comparing a poem to their personal lives. For Monday, the students must have completed their second draft.

Note...we will be outside Monday (weather permitting) for English class...your student won't want to miss the fun activity we are going to do that correlates with the movie they are watching in club time today, " Remember the Titans."
